Week 9 - Happy Easter - One lesson only this week!
Task 1 Feedback for Mid-Topic Test
Many students need to put some effort into studying for assessments.
Evidence;
Some common mistakes;
Some students demonstrated impressive skills when they applied their knowledge of the properties of non-metals to answer the questions on the physical properties of hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
Evidence;
- alloys
- preparation of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide were confused.
- pH scale
Some common mistakes;
- Quite a few students are using the equals sign = when writing a chemical equation. Always use an arrow ---> . The arrow shows a process. In this case it means "the reactants interact over time to form products". For example; hydrochloric acid + magnesium ---> hydrogen + magnesium chloride reactants ---> products
- A significant number of students stated that the TEST for carbon dioxide is to place a finger over a test tube and wait until it turns black! I wonder where they have learned this?
- Describe means to give details about an object or and event. So next time do so instead of just naming an event.
- When describing chemical reactions some students state that, for example, carbon dioxide was created. A better statement would be to state that carbon dioxide was produced.
- Physical properties are those that may be detected with our senses and/or by measurement.
- Oven cleaner is made of sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). Remember that bases react with grease and fats to produce soap.
- The symbol for chlorine is Cl not CL
Some students demonstrated impressive skills when they applied their knowledge of the properties of non-metals to answer the questions on the physical properties of hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
